Remember that medical tablet Panasonic revealed at IDF earlier this year? No? Well, it happened. Details were pretty hard to come by then, but the company’s officially announced the product as the H1 tablet. The fully ruggedized slate is built on familiar netbook internals with a 1.86 GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB SSD, a 10.4-inch 1024 x 768 resolution LCD display with an InPlay Technologies digitizer, and 802.11a/b/g/n. It’s going to be available in January of 2009 for a somewhat staggering $2,799, though the figure is less painful when you consider that awesome custom handle on the back. If you can’t get enough tedious details about devices such as this, you’re in luck: hit the read link for a serious plethora of information in the press releases, and check out the awesome educational video they’ve released after the break. We think you’ll find it has a lot to offer in terms of production values and soundtrack.

Update: We were contacted by a rep for Panasonic, and it turns out that the H1 is going to run you $2,999, not $2,799.

[Via Gotta Be Mobile]
from engadget

Termites be warned: Australian outfit Termicam is bringing the noise Predator-style with the Termibot, a dual-tread thermal imaging robot designed to eliminate insects. The bot scoots around inside walls and under houses relaying information from its thermal camera and moisture sensors back to an operator, and when termite (or other insect) activity is detected, it uses a probe to smash the nest and inject pesticides directly where they’re needed. While we’re not certain we need to help robots perfect the techniques they’ll use to ferret out the last remnants of the human resistance, we’re not too worried yet — the Termibot is currently tethered to its operator with a long cable. The designer says a fully wireless version is in the works and will be brought to market later this year, however — it’s being held up while the business experiences some growing pains. Termicam also says they’re also looking to expand the uses for the bot to other applications where that thermal camera might come in handy, like bomb disposal and search and rescue — looks like the PackBot’s got some competition.

[Via Crave]
The Huma-Pen Memoir resembles your average ink pen and shouldn’t look too out of place holding it down in your tee’s front pocket, but whenever you need a shot of insulin, it conveniently turns into an injector thanks to the hidden hypodermic needle encased within. The device also “allows the user to dial the amount of insulin they need to take,” and keeps the dosage, date, and time of the previous 16 shots in order to keep diabetics from overdosing. Users should be able to utilize the same pen for “around three years,” and after a needle is used, another is inserted and ready to go at the owners request. A few lucky participants have already received their pen here in the US, and while this nifty invention has been available across Europe for some time now, it will officially hit American retail shelves next week for around $45.

[Via MedGadget]

This whole electrocardio business is all well and good, but we must confess our initial disappointment when we realized that the little display on the left palm rest of this laptop was no SideShow apparatus — though we suppose you already knew how we feel about that little bit of Vista goodness that is SideShow. All the same, there ain’t much wrong with this HATO NB electrocardiogram doohicky that MSI slapped onto its latest laptop. The included electrodes can be hooked up to your aesthetically pleasing lady friend, allowing the laptop to record her vitals or even allowing a doctor to remotely examine the patient. You can also print out information the gadget gathers, or place the data on an SD card for doctor perusal. The rest of the details on this thing are sadly lost in machine translation, but it looks like MSI will be showing it off at CES next week, so we’ll keep an eye out. (For you guys: If you look long enough there is a pic of the computer on the right side of the chick).

Posing as a flip-phone wannabe, this handheld germ-eliminating light reportedly eradicates “99.99-percent of E-Coli, staphylococcus, salmonella, and germs that cause the flu and the common cold.” Aside from resembling a bevy of Nokia handsets, the device purportedly utilizes “UV-C light and nanotechnology” in order to “disinfect workplace keyboards or telephones (or mice), as well as items in the home that sustain germ vitality such as toothbrushes and cutting boards.” Notably, it must be held just so above the germ-infested area in order to sterilize it, but an internal timer signals when the process is complete. So while we aren’t apt to load down our knapsacks anymore with something so petty, the highly susceptible out there can get their own portable germ-slaying handheld now for $79.95.

The self-compacting, solar-powered trashcan developed by a Jamaica Plain inventor is powered by photoelectric panels, which supply power to motor-driven compactors inside. The green-colored boxy trashcan can hold some 150 gallons of trash, which is about five times more than a standard city receptacle and it even smells less. The solar-trashcan costs $4,300.

As people age and develop ocular diseases such as glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa, an unfortunate side effect is the gradual inability to locate and recognize objects not directly in front of them — a condition more commonly known as tunnel vision. Previous gadgets designed to combat this problem, such as so-called reverse binocular glasses, have indeed been successful in providing patients with additional visual data; however, their miniaturizing effect took much of the detail away from peripheral objects, making them uncomfortable and ultimately ineffective for everyday use. Fortunately for tunnel vision sufferers, a new, higher-tech option may soon be available to aid them in their plight, in the form of an innovative device designed by a team at Harvard Medical School affiliate Schepens Eye Research Institute. Developed in conjunction with MyVu HMD manufacturer MicroOptical Corp., the augmented vision device consists of a video camera and transparent display attached to a pair of glasses and tethered by wire to a small computer. The computer processes the incoming visual data from the camera and projects a real-time outline of the wearer’s surroundings right onto the center of the glasses, effectively “filling in the blanks” for the peripheral objects that would not normally be viewable. In tests conducted by the team, affected patients with only an hour of training were able to significantly increase the directness of their searches, while at the same time reducing the amount of time necessary to locate an object by about 22%. Further long term studies are necessary to determine how effective the device would be with more training and regular usage, but with such promising initial results, tunnel vision sufferers may finally be able to step out of the shadows and literally see the light.

The Standing Wheelchair concept design allows wheelchair users to stand upright in the wheelchair, allowing them to see the world as they did before. It looks similar to a Segway, but has more features to help the user keep upright and hold on to the wheelchair.

One of the many lifestyle adjustments paraplegic wheelchair users have to make is getting used to viewing the world sitting down. It really makes a difference, we hear, when you can no longer talk to people face to face. With the standing wheelchair, users can interact with people and generally regain some of their former “perspective”. – Jason Chen

We always said those sophisticated tracking tags had to be good for something other than data processing and jazzing up passports, and as the list of applications continues to grow, a study at Stanford University is showing how RFID chips can be used to potentially save lives. 1 out of 10,000 surgery survivors will experience the misfortune of having a foreign object remain in them after they’re all sewn up, and nearly 67% of those remnants are surgical sponges. The traditional tracking system (eyes and careful counting) has failed enough times to cause 57 deaths since 2000, definitely not something you want to hear when you’re going under the knife. Researchers have determined that tagging sponges (and other supplies) with RFID tags allows for a chip-reader to scan the body and detect any remaining, erm, used paraphernalia, yet to be removed. Volunteer-led studies have shown a perfect success rate in discovering leftovers thus far, and hopes are to have every instrument in the OR RFID’ed. This may make a few folks queasy, but we’re all for keeping our innards a sponge-free environment.

We’re looking for a way to put the hurt on clouds of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, something a mosquito-repelling T-shirt or necklace probably can’t do very well. Enter the Mega-Catch Ultra Trap, a serious-looking contraption that lures in the little buggers with a combination of flashing LEDs, an ultraviolet light and a strip of octenol. After attracting those bloodsuckers, it vacuums them up to their well-deserved deaths. The trap’s maker claims it can murder 3707 mosquitoes per night. If that’s not enough, you can add on a CO2 tank for extra killage.

That “3707 mosquitoes” death toll sounds pretty impressive until you figure that in your yard there are probably thousands more than that out for blood every night. We’re skeptical of any device being able to handle that kind of threat. Wondering if it works? Pony up $499 and you can find out for yourself. – Charlie White
