OQ’s HDTV with built-in Media Center PC

Posted on 03 January 2006 by admin

German company OQ (not to be confused with the OQO or the OC, of course), has made one aspect of owning a Media Center PC a little easier: they’ve crammed the guts of the PC into an HD display, turning the set into an all-in-one unit. OQ doesn’t make any displays themselves; they use LCDs from Philips and Samsung, in sizes from 32 to 40 inches. PC specs include a 1.6GHz Centrino, 512MB of RAM, 250GB drive, Windows Media Center Edition 2004 and a dual-layer burner. And, sure, we know you could do this yourself. But sometimes convenience is a good thing, and depending on what these guys are charging for this, it might even be worth a bit of a premium.

Norcent set to slam CES with 12 new flat panel TVs

Posted on 03 January 2006 by admin

Norcent is set to flood the CES showroom with no less than 12 new 16:9 widescreen televisions. On the LCD side, the new VION lineup includes the LT-2090 (20-inch), LT-2790 (27-inch), LT-3290 (32-inch) featuring PC inputs with two additional 37-inch and 42-inch models expected later this summer. Three hi-def sets round-off the LCDs including the 26-inch LT-2651, 32-inch LT-3251, and 37-inch LT-3751 offering up to a 1920 x 1080 panel resolution in the LT-3751. The Plasma line-up includes the VION PT-4291HD (42-inch) and PT-5091HD (50-inch) televisions featuring a 10,000:1 contrast ratio and PC and RS232 connectivity and two additional hi-def sets, the 42-inch PT-4241HD and 50-inch PT-5041HD — unfortunately the plasma series maxes out at a mere 1366 x 768 pixels for that 50-incher. All the larger televisions feature HDMI inputs, SRS surround, and built-in ATSC and NTSC tuners as well as the usual range of component, composite, and S-Video inputs. Pricing scales up from $500 for the LT-2651 to $3,199.99 for the PT-5041HD. Expect these to start shipping in Q1 nought six.

LG’s L2300B and L2300C 23-inch widescreen displays

Posted on 31 December 2005 by admin

Looks like the largescreen widescreen flatscreen monitor’s the tip to be on these days. LG’s officially jumped on one of our personal favorite bandwagons, and according to some recently surfaced FCC docs, apparently plans to release two such devices, the L2300B (which display 1920 x 1200) and the L2300C (which maxes out at 1360 x 768). Both share VGA and DVI inputs, as well as a rather unusual feature: RS-232 daisy chaining for controlling multiple monitors from a single head (i.e. input source selection, cascading power off, etc.). We have zero understanding as to why they didn’t use USB for this feature (after all, monitors of this kind should have a built-in USB hub, anyway), but whatever, LG, do yo thing.

Proton to show 55-inch LCD with 1080i/p

Posted on 31 December 2005 by admin

Taiwan’s Proton will roll out a series of HD LCDs at CES next week, in sizes ranging from 37 to 55 inches. The displays will support both 1080p and 1080i, and will come equipped with both digital and analog tuners. Sure, 55 inches may not be all that big anymore (though most of the affordable sets in that size tend to be either rear-projection or DLP), but we’re banking on continued competition from companies like Proton to keep driving prices down, to the point where we can actually put one of these on the wall of every room in the Engadget mansion. We’ll try to grill these guys for some pricing info when we’re at CES.
