As expected, Apple just updated the iPod touch with a new thinner stainless steel case — it’s still got the same display. There’s now hardware volume controls (hooray!) and a built-in speaker, and a Nike+ receiver is also built in, so you just need the shoe transmitter. On the software side, the UI has been tweaked and the new iTunes Genius features have been added, and the App Store is now included (obviously). Battery life is decent at 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video, and Apple’s doing the same “environmentally sound” design thing it did with the new nano. Three price points: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399. So much for that rumored price drop below the iPhone’s $199 price point, but we won’t complain too much about a $100 price drop.

We’re not sure the world needs another white 8.9-inch netbook with a 1.6GHz Atom, but Samsung’s got us covered just in case. Not much in the way of detailed specs or pricing, but it looks like Sammy’s packed three USB ports, VGA out, a webcam, and WiFi into the case — or, in other words, it had better make this thing cheap, since it’s not going to stand out from the pack otherwise. Back in March it was the world’s first laptop with a 128GB SSD. Now the Dynabook SS RX1 makes the bump to the RX2 while grabbing the title to the world’s lightest 12.1-inch laptop. Or so says Toshiba. Fortunately, Tosh didn’t skimp on battery life (up to 12.5-hours when configured with an SSD) to achieve that 858-grams (1.89-pounds) weight. Shipping in late September, the SS RX2 features a semi-rugged frame, a 1.2GHz SU9300 ULV Core 2 Duo processor; up to 160GB of hard disk (or 128GB SSD); an LED backlit 12.1-inch 1,280 x 800 pixel display; up to 3GB of memory; Intel GS45 Express graphics chipset; 3x USB and 1x eSATA; 802.11a/b/g/n draft 2.0; integrated DVD super-multi drive; and built-in 3G data — a road warrior’s weapon of paradise.

Sony’s been showing off the full-frame Alpha A900 DSLR since February, and after popping up in ads and in the wild last week, it’s official today, right on cue. Same basic specs you’ve known forever: 24.6 Exmor CMOS sensor, dual BIONZ image processors, ISO 6400 sensitivity, 3.0-inch LCD, 5fps shooting, and SteadyShot INSIDE in-body optical image stabilization. Sony’s also launching a few new Alpha lenses to complement this beast, including a Carl Zeiss 70-400mm f4-5.6 zoom. Early impressions from CNET are that it’s a bit slow to autofocus and didn’t wow with image quality, but dpreview was impressed overall, so we’ll wait for some in-depth reviews to hit before making a final judgment. You’re looking at a $3,000 outlay when this thing goes on sale in October — check out more pics in the gallery.

Steve Jobs just announced that the iPod classic will only come in a single $249 120GB config from now on. Seriously, that’s the only model of classic available now, storage junkies — better snap up those outgoing 160GB models while you can.
