Fujitsu gets official with FMV-U8240 UMPC

Posted on 17 May 2007 by admin

Fujitsu’s first foray into the UMPC market has already made itself known at this week’s WinHEC conference, but the company only seems to have gotten around to officially announcing it today, trotting out the device in all its convertible splendor. As we knew before, this one boasts a 5.6-inch 1024 x 600 display, an 800MHz Intel A110 processor, and up to 1GB of RAM, although the 40GB hard drive we first heard about looks to have been knocked down to 20GB. Underpinning the entire system is Intel’s recently-announced Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, which should give it a significant leg up over earlier UMPCs. What we didn’t know before was its model name, now revealed as the FMV-U8240, or when it’d actually be available and what it’d cost. On that latter point, we’ve got good news and bad: the device will be available fairly soon (mid-June), although only in Japan (at least to start with), where it’ll set you back Â¥144,000 or Â¥164,000 ($1,190-$1,360) depending on the configuration . A third model running Windows Vista Business will follow in July — those first two get Windows XP Professional instead.

enano’s latest mini PCs tout Core 2 Duo, energy efficiency

Posted on 17 May 2007 by admin

Joining Epson and a growing host of others in the miniscule PC arena, enano is throwing its own offerings in the hat while boasting about greenness all the while. The generation e2 lineup sports “book sized” enclosures, a sleek black paint job, and four different models to suit your fancy (and budget). All four units rely on one of Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors, but apparently, none are sporting the Santa Rosa love just yet. The machines can be configured with up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB of SATA hard drive space, an integrated TV tuner, gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g, 7.1 surround sound audio, and feature Intel’s GMA950 integrated graphics set, an SD / MS / MMC card reader, a total of four USB 2.0 ports, one 4-pin FireWire connector, DVI or VGA out via adapter, S-Video out, and audio in / out ports to finish things off. The box itself weighs in at just three pounds and measures 8.8- x 6.8- x 1.65-inches around, and while the company claims that you’ll save a bundle on energy costs with this power sipper, the up front charges ranging from around $1,200 to near $2,000 probably makes up for it.

DLO’s HomeDock Music Remote mimics your iPod screen

Posted on 17 May 2007 by admin

Gone are the days where you sat impatiently in another room flipping through endless tracks just waiting to hear the lead-in from Forever Young, as even DLO is joining the LCD-equipped remote game with the HomeDock Music Remote. Similar to the KeySpan, EWOO, and Popalive iterations, this RF remote dons a sleek OLED display (shown after the jump) that mimics the menus and text on your iPod‘s screen so that you can flip through playlists, scroll through albums, and see what’s currently playing all without having your eyes glued to your Apple. The device also comes with a docking stand that can connect to your home stereo or TV, and doubles as a charging station when plugged into an AC outlet. Still, you’d have to be mighty lazy or incredibly burdened with disposable income to make this one worth it, as DLO’s charging a stiff $129.99 for the kit.

Samsung slot-loading DVD burner supports 8cm discs

Posted on 17 May 2007 by admin

A huge problem with the all those sweet DVD camcorders is that any machine with a slot-loading DVD drive (cough, Apple) totally chokes on 8-centimeter discs. Well, Samsung’s got you covered with its new SE-T084L external burner, which it’s touting as the world’s only slot-loader to accept the format in addition to standard 12-centimeter discs. The bus-powered USB 2.0 burner features a seek time of 130 milliseconds, and record speeds of 8X DVD±R, 6X DVD+R DL, 4X DVD-R DL, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW, and 5X DVD-RAM. For some reason, Sammy only announced this thing today, but they’ve been shipping since April for $150 — maybe it wanted us to focus on those snazzy Blu-Ray burners instead?

Brother’s RL-700S prints out RFID cards

Posted on 17 May 2007 by admin

It’s just too fitting that a company dubbed Brother would unleash a printer that enables even the little guy to become a Big Brother, but the RL-700S printer can indeed pop out IC tag labels with embedded RFID by the dozen. Presumably marketed towards businesses who need to keep better track of personnel, this machine also sports an RFID reader to keep a digital eye on those passing by, and even laminates the cards so that your dutiful subordinates will never suspect that their hard-earned “Employee of the Month” card is actually an undercover tracking device. Additionally, users can even pick up an optional PS-9000 module that enables network printing, and while we’re not savvy on the price, it looks like it’ll only be available in the oft surveyed nation of Japan anyway.
