Pioneer announces 8th-gen plasmas with 20,000:1 contrast

Pioneer 8th gen 1080p 50-inch plasma
Pioneer has announced its 8th generation of plasmas in Europe, with six 720p sets available in June in 42- and 50-inch sizes, and four 1080p sets in 50- and 60-inch flavors coming in September. All models have integrated DVB-T tuners and detachable speakers, with the 720p sets sporting a 16,000:1 contrast ratio, and the 1080p sets stepping it up to a whopping 20,000:1. Pioneer claims that it redesigned the sets from the ground up with improved color reproduction and contrast in mind, and have improved over older plasmas by up to 80%, including Intelligent Brightness Control, which promises to display the best picture regardless of lighting conditions. Prices and exact release dates have not been set, but Tech.co.uk is reporting potential model numbers of PDP508 for the 50-inch 1080p set and PDP4280XD / PDP5080XD for the 42- / 50-inch 720p units.

Desktop Factory to offer up $5,000 3D printer

Posted on 08 May 2007 by admin

While they’re still a long ways from sharing shelf space with cut-rate inkjet printers, it looks like three dimensional printers are slowly inching towards the consumer space, with Idealab company Desktop Factory set to sell its first 3D printer for not entirely unreasonable price of $4,995 sometime this year. According to The New York Times, some 200 customers have already signed up to buy the printer, which will make up the entirety of the initial test run. They may be feeling a bit a buyer’s remorse before too long, however, as the company says the price of the printers will come down to $1,000 in four years. Eventually, Idealab foresees companies selling 3D designs of products on the Internet, which people could then simply print out at home. For now, however, the printers would seem to have somewhat limited applications, relying on nylon mixed with aluminum and glass that results in gray objects that have somewhat jagged edges and a sandy finish.

Planex MZ-04G router sports USB, BitTorrent compatibility

Posted on 08 May 2007 by admin

External P2P clients with a hint of NAS aren’t unheard of, but it’s still refreshing to see a new face joining the relatively small clan. Planex‘s MZ-04 takes a four-port gigabit Ethernet router, throws in wireless functionality, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, and gives the BitTorrent savvy the ability to hook up an external HDD and keep those downloads / uploads rolling through the night even when the PC catches some shut eye. Additionally, the firm suggests that customers could take advantage of the iTunes server function to stream music via Ethernet / WiFi, and the obvious NAS characteristics and PlayStation 3-compatibility are nice touches as well. Unfortunately, we’ve no idea how soon (or not) this feature-packed router will hit store shelves, but here’s to hoping it makes the journey to American soil.

Samsung Aura Q45 details emerge

Posted on 08 May 2007 by admin

The action on the Santa Rosa front continues to heat up as details about Samsung‘s Aura Q45 leak out. The 12.1-inch little monster, which we first spotted in concept form at CeBIT, sports a 1.8GHz Intel T7100 Core 2 Duo on an 800MHz bus with a 128MB NVIDIA Geforce Go 8400M powering a 1,280 x 800 screen. No word on that oh-so-hot integrated HSDPA / WiBRO modem or the built-in DMB tuner on Sammy’s CeBIT concept, but the 1.3 megapixel webcam and the multiformat memory card reader seem to have made the cut. The Q45 is expected to drop in Europe “shortly” for €1,159 ($1,578) — not bad, not bad at all.

Canon unveils HR10: its first AVCHD camcorder

Posted on 08 May 2007 by admin

Granted, Sony and Panasonic got into the AVCHD game quite some time ago, but you won’t catch us griping about more competition. The relatively small HR10 sports a CMOS sensor, Digic DVII processor, optical image stabilization, a 2.7-inch LCD monitor, HDMI / component outputs, USB 2.0, and a miniSD slot for saving 3.1-megapixel stills. Additionally, the unit touts Full HD capability, a 10x optical zoom lens, and instant AF, and users can record directly to three-inch DVD-R / DVD-RW discs in a variety of bitrates. Notably, the DVD camcorder won’t come bundled with any sort of video editing software, but it will be hitting store shelves for those still interested this August for $1,199.
