ASUS announces P735 with 3G

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

If only ASUS made that GPS-packin’ P535 with a 3G radio… well, by George, they do! (Sorta.) The P735 takes the P535′s winning formula (for folks that consider a keyboardless design a “winning formula,” anyway) but trades GPS for some glorious UMTS data in a 19mm-thick package. Other features include 256MB of onboard Flash, 2 megapixel primary and VGA front-facing cams, 802.11b / g, Bluetooth 2.0, and miniSD expansion. Conspicously missing from the spec sheet, though, are Crossbow and any form of 3G usable this side of the pond. Maybe next time you’ll think of us, ASUS.

Sony VAIO G1 laptop reviewed

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

Sony’s sleek little VAIO G1 laptop may still only officially be available in Japan, but that didn’t stop the folks at LAPTOP Magazine from getting their hands on one for a full review. As you’d no doubt expect, the laptop immediately impresses, tipping the scales at a featherweight 2.1 pounds and lighting things up with the familiar 12.1-inch display that some of us still find to be the best balance of size and portability, although it unfortunately doesn’t get Sony’s trademark XBRITE treatment. They found that the rest of the laptop’s specs mostly delivered the goods as well, with the low-power Core Solo processor providing a reasonable trade-off between performance and battery life, the 80GB hard drive providing adequate storage, and the integrated DVD burner making a welcome appearance in a laptop this size. All but the least demanding users will probably want to opt for a memory upgrade though, with the standard 512MB unlikely to cut it for most, especially those planning on upgrading to Vista. Also coming up a bit short was the laptop’s keyboard, which is about 90 percent smaller than the average laptop’s and could take some getting used to. Of course, the price of all that portability comes at quite a premium, and you’ll have to decide if $2,599 is too much to ask to lighten your load a bit.

Casio’s EXILIM EX-Z1050 and EX-Z75 compact digicams

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

Looks like Casio is in the mood for ever-so-slight upgrades rather than completely revamping a pair of its EXILIM digital cameras, as the EX-Z1050 and EX-Z75 both seem to be brushed up versions of their former selves. Nevertheless, the 10-megapixel Z1050 sports that all too common shiny silver enclosure, 2.6-inch LCD monitor, anti-shake technology, up to ISO 3200, rechargeable Li-ion battery, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a 30fps VGA video mode as well. The slimmer, sleeker Z75 comes in with 7.2-megapixels, a equally sized 2.6-inch screen, 3x optical zoom, anti-shake, USB 2.0, and a “best shot” feature that presumably measures lighting and surroundings in order to automatically snap the most attractive shot. So while Casio hasn’t done anything revolutionary here, you can still pick up the Z1050 for Â¥12,990 ($107) or the Z75 for just Â¥9,990 ($83) if you’re content with middle-of-the-road.

Update: Hold up, before you go buying a plane ticket to whatever fantasy land they sell these $80 cameras in: the quoted prices are actually in Taiwanese dollars, not yen, meaning that the Z1050 is dropping for $394 and the Z75 for $303.

[Thanks, Victor T.]

Meizu’s M8? Apple lawyers, start your engines

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

We’re not sure if the pics above are the result of an engorged, Chinese fanboy fantasy or actual product renderings of Meizu’s rumored M8. We wouldn’t be surprised either way what with China-based Meizu’s history of uh, Apple inspired design. Posted by a senior discussion-forum jockey on the Meizu site, the M8 is now said to measure in at a scant 57x105x11.5-mm and packs both a GSM and Chinese TD-SCDMA 3G radio, a 3.3-inch 720×480 pixel display, Bluetooth, a 3 megapixel camera, and an ARM11 CPU capable of recording video at 30fps at the device’s full 720 x 480 resolution. Too good to be true? Perhaps, but if not Meizu than certainly some other nimble Chinese outfit will be unveiling their iPhone clone soon enough and likely well before the iPhone hits Asia sometime in 2008. And as we’ve seen, even Apple’s tenacious legal team can be helpless in the face of shutting down copycats on foreign turf.

Samsung’s three new digicams: the i7 PMP, 10 megapixel NV11, and wide-angle N74

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

As you know by now, Samsung can get a little freaky when it comes to cameras. Be it their 10 megapixel cameraphone or that crazy new VLUU i70 with HSDPA we checked over the weekend. Those products like all their “world’s first, biggest, fastest” claims are mere props meant to you lure you into their mainstream lineup of gear. You know, like their new i7 (pictured), NV11, and L74 digital cameras. Ok, the i7 isn’t your run-of-the-mill digicam as it sports an MP3 player and rotating 3.0-inch LCD ’round back for use as a video player pumping simulated SRS 3D sound. As a camera, it delivers a 7.2 megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom Samsung NV lens, Advanced Shake Reduction technology, an ISO 1600 setting, and the ability to record SVGA quality MPEG-4 video. The NV11 is the followup to their award winning but lambasted NV 10. We’re still looking at a 10.1 megapixel shooter only now with a 5x Schneider-Kreuznach optical zoom lens, 2.7-inch LCD, ASR stabilization, and the ability to record 30fps VGA video in MPEG-4 format. The L74 goes wide with a 28mm wide-angle 3.6x optical zoom lens like Panny’s DMC-FX01 before it. It also brings a 3.0-inch LCD, ASR anti-shake, face recognition, ISO 1600 sensitivity, and the ability to record to MPEG-4 at SVGA resolutions. No prices or availability but we should expect these to escape Korea (and their VLUU branding) later in the year. Pics of the other two after the break.

Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro previewed, inspected

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

Although Fujifilm’s S3 Pro UVIR DSLR isn’t exactly antiquated, the company’s next rendition has been anticipated for quite some time, and now LetsGoDigital has had a chance to open ‘er up, snap some shots of it, and let us know what this thing’s all about. While not delving into specifics, the preview does showcase the S5 Pro‘s frame, features, and expectations of the February-bound digicam, and harps on the magnesium casing which favors the one found on the Nikon D200. It was also noted that the current edition can only handle up to 4GB flash cards, but hopefully a firmware update will allow larger cards to take part in the fun. As expected, the Super CCD SR Pro image sensor was highly regarded, and the firm’s well-known face-finding technology is alive and well on this unit too. Overall, the company felt that this unit did the Fujifilm brand justice, as it paid close attention to the minutiae that makes Fujifilm cameras “unique,” so be sure and hit the read link for closeups of crannies that you didn’t even know this €1,895 ($2,448) monster had.

Luxiium Luxeed keyboard goes dark, stays lit with LEDs

Posted on 30 January 2007 by admin

For those of you feeling the white keyboard motif, the Luxeed pale-colored illuminator should certainly do the trick, and if you’re holding tight to your Apple key, there’s another option (sans color) just for you, but for those looking for stark contrasts and dark boards, Luxiium’s latest Luxeed is what you’re after. The sleek, black device sports a detachable number keypad, built-in palm rests, trackball media controller, and of course, the same programmable LED lighting action found in the white rendition, but only lights up the key’s marking instead of the entire button. Unfortunately, we’re still clueless on pricing or availability, but you can rest assured it’ll likely clock in a good bit under the much-anticipated Optimus, and if you’re interested in seeing a few closeups of the keyboard lightin’ it up, be sure to click on through.
