HTC Athena

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

We’ll admit, we’re a bit envious of this one, as it seems one lucky soul has got his / her palms around an HTC Athena, and thankfully, hasn’t kept it all bottled up. In a rather nice preview of the unit, we find an (expected) 624MHz Intel PXA270 processor, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of Flash ROM, 8GB hard drive, TV-out, five-inch 640 x 480 resolution backlit screen, three-megapixel camera, VGA mode for video telephony, rechargeable Li-ion battery, built-in microphone, GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, USB, and of course, a bevy of communication options including GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSDPA. Yeah, we know you’re burning through this text just to find out about the photos, so if you’ve hung in there this far, be sure to click on through for a few more shots, and hit the read link for even more pictorial delight.

Buffalo’s USB WiFi adapter boosts range 210%

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

If your built-in WiFi antenna is less than phenomenal, or you’re just looking to jack some WiFi from another country to avoid severe punishment, Buffalo’s AirStation WLI-U2-SG54HP might be the answer. This USB 2.0 stick adapter operates like any vanilla 802.11b/g wireless LAN adornment, but ups the ante by suctioning to the rear of your display and reportedly boosting your reception capability by 210-percent. Granted, we’re not sure where the firm is deriving this lofty figure, but it’s probably safe to assume that strapping a relatively large antenna on the back of your lappie will persuade a few more far away signals to come your way than your factory-installed alternative. So if you’re looking for a way to extend that range (legally), or just enjoy having a tethered weapon at your disposal at all times, Buffalo‘s WLI-U2-SG54HP can be snapped up next month for Â¥3,700 ($31)

Toshiba-SanDisk claim title to highest-density 16Gb NAND flash

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

Take that Samsung! Toshiba and their partners in NAND, SanDisk, just announced what they are calling the highest available density of single-chip MLC NAND flash memory. The new 8Gb (1GB) NAND will be available in commercial shipments starting later in Q1 with 16Gb (2GB) NAND on the way in Q2. Presumably, this is the technology at the guts of SanDisk’s new 32GB+ SSDs hitting OEMs this spring. Great, but Sammy maintains bragging rights to the fact that they were smart enough to bring 50-nanometer technology to market whereas Tosh tried and failed with a relatively less complex 52-nanometer technology — Tosh’s new single-chip NAND relies on 56-nanometer technology instead. Now, we’re not going to pretend to be experts in NAND fabrication, but we fail to see how 56-nm technology produces a higher density than Sammy’s 50-nm processes. So who’s right? Who cares! Just as long as the trend towards cheaper, faster, and smaller flash memory continues.

Fujitsu launches its LifeBook P7230 ultraportable

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

We were a tad bit curious as to exactly what this LifeBook P7230 was packing when we spotted it late last year, and now that Fujitsu is busting this thing out in Taiwan, it doesn’t look like we’ll be too terribly disappointed. The unit sports a 1280 x 768 10.6-inch LCD, 1.2GHz ULV Core Solo U1400 processor, the Intel 945GMS Express Chipset and PRO 3945ABG WiFi, DVD super-multi burner, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB HDD, Bluetooth 2.0 and VGA webcam. Other perks include gigabit Ethernet and a PCMCIA slot, but the real excitement is the 6 hours of battery life, 1.2-inch thickness and 2.6 pound weight — not bad at all for a laptop packing an optical drive. If you happen to be kicking it in Taiwan, you can pick one of these up for $66,800 TWD, about $2,024 US, but hopefully Fujitsu will be keeping the Q2010 “world’s most desirable laptop” company Stateside before too terribly long.

Airis offers up pocketable N0041 / N0042 PMPs

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

Airis’ prior offerings may not have struck anyone as beautiful, but the company’s latest duo adds a much-needed dash of style to an otherwise middle-of-the-road PMP. These pocket-friendly players come in at 3.38- x 1.57- x 0.53-inches apiece, and each muster a 1.5-inch 128 x 128 resolution LCD, MP3, WMA, SMV, JPEG, and BMP compatibility, an integrated FM tuner, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a removable battery that puts out just 10 hours of usage before needing another gulp from the AC outlet. No, you won’t find anything here out of the ordinary, but the 1GB N0041 and 2GB N0042 start at just €69 ($89), and similar to another option out there, you can reportedly personalize this for €10 ($13) more.

Toshiba updates Satellite P105, U205 laptops for Vista

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

Looks like Tosihiba is continuing its Vista-updating ways, with its Satellite P105 and U205 laptops the latest to get a refresh in anticipation of the big launch day. First up, the heavyweight (7.1 pounds) Satellite P105 brings things up to speed on the desktop replacement level, with a 17-inch widescreen display, T5200 Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB of RAM, and up to 200GB of hard drive space, along with a bundled USB TV tuner to put those Media Center features to good use. Look for it to be available as soon as Vista’s let loose for $1,599 or $1,649 depending on the configuration. On the more portable side of things, the Satellite U205 will lighten your load to a more manageable 4.1 pounds, with a 12.1-inch widescreen display, an unspecified processor, 160GB hard drive, and up to 2GB of RAM; it’ll set you back between $1,299 and $1,599 depending on the config. Both will be available with your choice of Vista Home Premium or Vista Ultimate, although the U205 will apparently miss the Vista launch date by a few days, with it set to bring up the rear on February 6th.

Olympus’ Stylus (Mju) 760 and 770SW all weather and underwater shooters

Posted on 25 January 2007 by admin

In addition to that freaky 18x zoomer, Olympus is shepherding out a pair of newborn Mjus this morning with their Mju (AKA, Stylus) 760 and Mju 770SW all weather shooters. Both pack a 7.1 megapixel CCD, 3x optical zoom, 2.5-inch 230k color LCD, choice of 3 all American/French/Dutch colors (red, white, and blue), support for xD-Picture Cards, ISO 1600 shots, and a suite of pre-defined underwater modes for easy point-and-shoot snaps as deep as 40-meters when coupled with their optional underwater cases. The Mju 760 differs by offering mechanical image stabilization not found in the 770SW. And while the 760 won’t shy away from a little dampness, the 770SW downright prefers it just like its predecessors. In fact, it can take pretty much anything you throw at it: it’s shockproof against falls from as high as 1.5-meters, waterproof to a depth of 10-meters, freezeproof in temps as low as -10 Celsius, and can withstand loads up to 100-kg (220-pounds) for those tempted to risk a slip of this slimster into their back pocket. It also packs a built-in “one-touch light” to find subjects tucked inside the reefs, an on-screen water pressure gauge, and a lens slathered with water repellent for droplet-free shooting. Both are expected to hit in March with the 760 demanding about £200/$394 and the 770SW about £300/$591. Pics of the 760 after the break.

[Thanks, David]
