Two more Hitachi hybrid DVD / HDD camcorders: DZ-HS301, DZ-HS303

Posted on 05 December 2006 by admin

Looks like Hitachi’s DZ-HS500A isn’t the only hybrid DVD / hard drive camcorder they’ve got planned (although these do look very similar, and are likely just different model numbers). After we previously heard about this Wooo, it looks like Hitachi’s gone final on the DZ-HS301 and DZ-HS303. Both feature a 2.7-inch widescreen display, 8GB internal drive, DVD-RAM, DVD±RW, and DVD-R support, and the “One Touch Dubbing” system that masters video DVDs without a host PC. The differences, however, seem to be entirely optical: the DZ-HS301 features a 1.3 megapixel sensor with 15x optical and 800x digital zoom, while the DZ-HS303 features a 3.3 megapixel sensor with 10x optical and 500x digital zoom. They’ll run for $1449 and $1649 Australian (about $1,150, and $1,300), respectively. [Warning: PDF link]

Sirius Stiletto 10 now available

Posted on 05 December 2006 by admin

Those looking for a little portable satellite radio action but not willing to drop upwards of $350 for the Stiletto 100 now have another option at their disposal, with the stripped-down Stiletto 10 now available for a full hundred bucks less. To bring that price down, this model eschews the built-in WiFi of the Stilleto 100, as well as about nine tenths of its storage space, now able to store only ten hours of Sirius content as opposed to a hundred (as the names would suggest). Otherwise, the player looks to be pretty much in line with its more feature-packed sibling, with the same 2.2-inch color display, dual batteries, and a similar, albeit grayer form factor. You can grab this one direct from Sirius (though they appear to be out of stock at the moment) or from your retailer of choice (most of which appear to have some on hand).

[Thanks, Jose]

Toshiba announces 100GB 1.8-inch HDD

Posted on 05 December 2006 by admin

Who uses 1.8-inch drives? Why Apple’s 5.5G iPod (among other notables) of course. So if you’re thinking about the next big thing, remember this, Tosh just announced their 100GB, 1.8-inch hard disk drive due for mass production starting January. The new drives use perpendicular storage technology like their other drives and feature a 4,200rpm spin, 15ms seek, 100MBps max transfer rate and improved error correction code.

NEC’s ShieldPRO Tablet PC: as tough as it is ugly, almost

Posted on 05 December 2006 by admin

Look, it’s fine to claim your wares can handle drops, spills, pressure and dust. Who doesn’t aspire to a sense of unkempt ruggedness now and then? But if you’ve got the ‘nads to drop it or bath it in a tub of sparkling water for press shots, well, our mustachioed public servants should probably take notice. Sure, NEC’s new ShieldPRO Tablet PC isn’t the prettiest girl on the block, but she’ll do ya right when the going gets tough: 90-cm (nearly 3-foot) drops to concrete, -20°C to 50°C (-4°F to 122°F) temps, dust, sand, water… no problem, this pup brings a 54 Ingress Protection rating. The Magnesium Alloy chassis measures in at 48-mm (1.89-inch) thick and up to 3.5-kg (7.7-pounds) to protect a 1.2GHz Core Solo U1400, up to 2GB of memory and 60GB of disk, a 1024×768 12.1-inch display, 8-hour battery, and a variety of in and outs. You can even opt for a Linux pre-load and Solid State Disk for added robustness. This slab is yours nicely spec’d for about Â¥300,000 or $2,600 starting January in Japan.

Yoto V200 rocks QVGA on the cheap

Posted on 05 December 2006 by admin

Sure, there are plenty of Chinese manufacturers still doing that boring old “copy Apple” bit, but it’s great to see some real innovation like this Yoto V200, which is dominated by a 2.4-inch QVGA screen, and yet still makes room for miniSD and other fancy features. Codec support includes DivX and H.264, and the player sports a microphone, some sort of music sharing feature (probably just a built-in speaker), an ebook reader, a photo viewer and a game of Russian Squares. The best news of all is that this juicy player, which features 1GB of built-in memory, goes for a mere 399 Chinese yuan, around $51 US. Sounds like if you can track one down it might a good deal even with the cost of importation, and we should be seeing this hit Chinese shelves sometime around the Chinese New Year in February.
