Samsung launching YP-K3, little bro to the K5

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

We thought the YP-K5 wasn’t too shabby, but it really needed to be rid of that folding integrated speaker system. Looks like Samsung’s new K3 did just that. We’re lacking other hard detail but it’s got a 1.8-inch OLED display and FM tuner and hopefully the same 1, 2, and 4GB options (and maybe if we’re lucky an 8GB, too). Odd how much this one reminds us of the Philips GoGear SA9100 / SA9200, but watch out for it (and even maybe a Philips-led design lawsuit) shortly.

[Thanks, Tom]

Philips DCM270 docks GoGear and iPod both

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

Just in case you didn’t get your fill of tall-ass monolithic 2001-lookin’ portable audio device docks, Philips has a new cop on the beat: the not-yet-announced Docking Enterainment System DCM270. Besides playing CDs and docking your GoGear (or wait — is that a YP-K3?), it’ll even play nice with your iPod, something Apple’s decidedly punier Hi-Fi can’t attest to. More on it soon.

A-DATA’s Solar Disk and VoIP Disk

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

It’s a solar cell! It’s a VoIP phone! It’s a USB stick? Convergence isn’t just limited to cellphones and laptops, pallies, we’re already seeing companies try to cram in functions and features to the new ubiquity: USB drives. Enter A-DATA’s as yet unannounced Solar and VoIP Disks. The Solar does as you’d expect, collects power and displays how much storage you’ve got left (although we’re not super hot on the idea of an unstable current pulsing through our flash drive); the VoIP, unlike the Vonage V-Phone, actually provides audio functionality for calling as well.

Philips PET830 and PET1030 media players

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

Philips has some new unannounced media players to take on the go: the PET830 and PET1030. The PET830 (above) is a tablet-style DVD player with an 8.5-inch display and a Zero Bright Dot warrantee (i.e. no dead pixels), as well as having the ability to play MPEG-4 and DivX video, and MP3 and WMA audio files from its CD. So far as we can tell the PET1030 (pictured after the break) is about the same, but with a 10.2-inch swiveling display, and USB 2.0 as well as a memory card slot. Watch out for these real soon.

New Media Life’s TAVI 030 portable media powerhouse

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

We’re a little confused as to how this former Portable Media Center ODM design reminiscent more of a Nintendo DS (or the later Game Boy Advance SP) than a mobile media workhorse got such a makeover from New Media Life, but the TAVI 030 sounds like it’ll be anything but a slouch. Set to be announced soon enough, it’ll supposedly come equipped with wireless IPTV, podcasting support, and satellite TV — even some HDTV support. Not that it’s going to do you a whole lot of good on a QVGA display (or whatever it’ll inevitably have), but this will definitely be one to watch out for Q107.

Hitachi to introduce DZHS500A hybrid DVD / hard drive camcorder

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

We’ve got another one here we’ve yet to learn a lot about: Hitachi‘s apparently working on a hybrid DVD / hard drive camcorder that not only records video to DVD and your drive (and even SD), but also records video to DVD from that very same internal drive, making burning DVD videos a PC-less process. Suhweet. Watch out for more info on the DZHS500A soon.

SwizzleStik: back that phone up

Posted on 29 November 2006 by admin

Yet another unannounced device tonight: Spark Technology’s SwizzleStik (no c, damn you), a USB drive intended to make phone data management simple. We’re assuming that’s on the SIM end of things, but it’s supposedly able to sync more than just your contacts, like your ringtones, music and photos. If this thing is just a microSD to USB adapter, we’re gonna have to have a little talk with Spark.
