BenQ FP241W 24-incher reviewed

Posted on 08 November 2006 by admin

The folks at bit-tech.net recently took some time to sit down and stare at BenQ’s new FP241W 24-inch widescreen LCD to see how it stacks up against the competition, coming away mightily impressed with the monitor in most respects. Specs-wise, the FP241W hits all the right marks, with the de facto 1920 x 1200 resolution, 6ms response time, 500cd/m² brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and an ample supply of inputs (both video and USB), not the least of which is an HDMI port — something its biggest competitor lacks. Of course, specs alone aren’t exactly a hard and fast way to judge a monitor, but bit-tech finds the BenQ lives up to them, performing well in both gaming and regular desktop use and, in their opinion, beating Dell’s more popular option in just about every respect. About the only faults they found were a few problems with adjusting the monitor (you’ll have to live with it about three inches off your desk), a lack of memory card reader, and a relatively plain design — although given some of some of the monitors we’ve seen, we’re content with BenQ playing it safe.

Samsung’s SPH-8100 WinMo Pocket PC with Mobile WiMax, IMS, and DMB

Posted on 08 November 2006 by admin

It’s not the dual-mode WiMax / GSM handset we’re waiting for, but Samsung’s SPH-M8100 Mobile WiMAX slider should force an optical interrupt nevertheless. Like the SPH-P9000 introduced yesterday, this device is part of Sammy’s Mobile WiMAX MITs lineup only this time in a dedicated IMS lovin’ handset. Come on, you remember IMS right? It’s the IP Multimedia Subsystem we saw under global trial back in February which even Cingular has been known to dabble around with. IMS support means this not-a-cellphone handset will not only provide access to content over high-speed Mobile WiMAX (WiBro as it’s known in Korea), but it’ll also feature such SIP-based services as VoIP calls, video conferencing, and “Push-to-All” which we assume is just the push-to-talk, walkie-talkie service as it’s known ’round here. The handset runs Windows Mobile 5.0 PocketPC and features a 2.8-inch 65k color, 240×320 touch-screen TFT display, MMCmicro expansion, and 2 megapixel camera with another 0.3 megapixel shooter up front for video conferences. It also features T-DMB mobile TV with both the antenna and stylus tucked neatly away in the case. Oh, and this handset will pull double-duty as a Mobile WiMAX modem for your laptop too. Now pardon us, we have to get back to banging our rocks together, there’s mammoth for dinner tonight! Lots more pics after the break.

Samsung’s 1GB S-SIMTM: your GSM SIM and 1GB storage, combined

Posted on 08 November 2006 by admin

So you picked up your GSM-variety LG KG800 Chocolate phone to find it not only missing the 850 band, but it also suffers from a paltry 128MB of on-board memory (without any type of expansion) making the whole media aspect of the phone relatively pointless. Well check it tri-bander, ’cause Samsung is ready to boost your storage via the ol’ SIM slot by coupling 1GB of NAND flash with a traditional SIM without upping the size of the card. Yes, that makes the 1GB S-SIMTM card yet another “world’s biggest” for Samsung. No word on when these 1GB S-SIM (as they are generically dubbed) cards will be available or who might actually carry them. All we know is they they’re on display right now at the Cartes 2006 show in Paris.
