HP 50g Calculator

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

50gs_170x190.jpgHP released their latest graphic calculator, the 50g, last week and this thing is tech’d out to all hell. The can connect to this calculator via a variety of ways—infrared, USB, serial (you kidding me? Serial ports still exist?) and SD memory. According to Erica over at CNET News, this calculator can even calculate in Reverse Polish Notation. Now I don’t have the slightest clue what the means, but it sure sounds fancy.

Additionally you can write your own programs and transfer them onto the calculator. As long as I can put solitaire on this thing, I’ll be happy. $150.

Asustek R2H UMPC now available

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

We previously told you a couple weeks ago that Asustek had made its R2H UMPC official. Well now the R2H gets officially doubly real-deal official, given that DigiTimes reports that it’s hit the streets for over $1,000. To recap, this little guy has a 7-inch screen, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR, 802.11a/b/g, fingerprint reader, a 900MHz Celeron M ULV, and can store up to 60GB worth of whatever it is that you so badly need to carry around with you. We’re not going to lie, we can definitely say that as usual, Asus delivered one of the single best designs in this form factor we’ve yet seen.

German researchers unveil a penny-sized projector

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

What you probably haven’t seen is this penny-sized projector created by crafty German engineers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering in Jena. The 16mm (0.6 inches) wide projector works by shooting a laser at a single vibrating mirror, and although it works with red and blue lasers, the scientists say that green diode lasers aren’t yet small enough, preventing the projector from hitting a full range of colors — so hold off on thinking you’re going to be watching “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” from a thumb-drive sized device in the near future. Dr. Peter Schreiber of the Fraunhofer Institute told the BBC that such a device could be eventually embedded into cellphones or PDAs. We’d love to be able to project a movie from our phone, but sadly Dr. Schreiber didn’t tell the Beeb how big the projected image is, how much it will or currently costs, nor when it might be available — not even a rough estimate, like 2014. Why must you be so coy with us, Fraunhofer Institute?

[Thanks, Ndric]

Neuros OSD hardware out in beta, let the hacking begin!

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

Ah, so this is what you get when you take a hardware platform “open-source” — the Neuros OSD. This infinitely hackable Linux-based media recorder / player beta unit is on sale now. Yeah, beta, ’cause this ain’t no ordinary hardware offering. See Neuros is willing to pay you cash-money “bounties” to code new features into the open source firmware: YouTube or Google video ($1000), Flickr photo browsing ($600), wireless remote capabilities from a WiFi handheld device such as a PDA ($500), TiVo-style radio recording when connected to an FM/AM or satellite receiver ($700), and VoIP capabilities when a USB phone is connected ($500). Not bad for something you’ll likely do for the fun of it anyway right? Out of the box, you get a standalone media player which can record from any external analog audio/video source and then automatically encode it for playback on PSPs, mobile phones, and iPods in popular formats such as MPEG-4, AVI, ASF, MP3, OGG, WMA, and AC3. And with a dual-core ARM9 / TI DSP, multi-card memory slot, USB host capability, Ethernet, recording up to 720×480 resolution at 30fps, IR Blaster, and S-Video in and Composite audio/video in/out, well, you still might be tempted to plunk down the meager $230 to take this baby home. Hurry though, only 200 beta units left!

Samsung 4-inch DMB T450 TV Looks Like an iPod TV

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

samsungdmb2.jpg

This won’t make it out of Korea, the Samsung DMB-T450 looks quite a lot sexier than the DMB devices we’ve seen before. It’s got a built-in antenna, iPod-like white finish, MP3 playback, USB 1.1 connectivity, SD/MMC expansion slot and 4-hour battery. Boy those South Koreans sure know how to keep themselves entertained on the road—when they’re not avoiding being kidnapped by North Koreans and forced to make movies.

Giant Anglepoise Lamp, For Big Desks or Scaring Old People

Posted on 20 September 2006 by admin

giant_anglepoise.jpgThe Anglepoise lamp is one of the coolest and most innovative lamps ever, and to celebrate its 70th birthday the company has designed a Giant Anglepoise Lamp that is three times the traditional size. Look at it, it just freaking awesome. Imagine having one in your living room, oh the ladies would swoon. Unfortunately this lamp starts at £1,234 ($2,300) for the white and cream version, and the black version runs £1,660 ($3,100). What’s the deal with companies making the black models more expensive? I really want a black MacBook but I’ll be damned if I have to pay a couple hundred dollars more for it.
