When Olympus unveiled the E-1 DSLR way, way back in 2003 it was the first DSLR designed from art-to-part specifically for digital photography. Now the lucky few attending Photokina will be the first to see the eagerly anticipated E-1 followup when the show kicks off tomorrow. Well, kinda. See, Olympus will be displaying a concept model when the doors swing wide so take these images as a taste of what’s to come, ’cause that’s all we’ve got for now. Oh, and be sure to go full screen, ’cause just like Paris, the new Engadget’s a moveable feast.

Remember that ridiculously-sized but utterly awesome Seitz 6×17 Digital that we showed you yesterday? Well, Seitz has another one to wave around at this year’s Photokina. This time, though, it’s a 360-degree cam that’ll capture 470 million pixels worth of color and light, and furthermore, will complete that task in two seconds — less than the amount of time it’s taken you to read half of this paragraph. Like the 6×17, the Roundshot D3 has a ISO range from 500 to 10,000, accepts lenses from 24mm to 250mm and comes with a maxed out Mac mini to act as its oversized flash card. The D3 is more expensive than the 6×17, however, with the mobile version taking a sizeable 46,900 francs ($37,463) from that numbered Swiss bank account of yours, while the studio version comes in at 43,700 Swiss francs ($34,906). In either case, you’ll probably want to head over to the Seitz site to get in line to pre-order this bad boy, which is due to hit the streets of Geneva by early 2007. Oh yeah, and make sure to catch a big pic of the D3 on the next page.

After bringing us the TV for Skype Anywhere product we were kinda hoping for something equally unusual from Novac’s next consumer offering. Unfortunately, all we’re getting this time around is the NV-HV355 Mobile Video HDD media player in need of a 3.5-inch IDE disk. Once you sort that out, stuff the disk via USB 2.0 with all the DivX 3/4/5, MPEG-1/2/4, XviD, VOB, JPEG, and MP3 files you can muster. Plug ‘er into the TV via composite, component, or even SCART, link the coax to your hi-fi and kick back with your Pabst resting on that slim remote coaster content in the knowledge that you’re sticking it to the man mkay torrent-boy. On the cheap too at Â¥12,800 or about $109 when this drops in fiver.

Photokina is about to get started and with it, a couple of new shooters from Fujifilm. The FinePix S5 Pro DSLR pictured above is their followup to the S3 Pro and incorporates the same 12.3 megapixel Super CCD SR Pro sensor only now featuring Fujifilm’s new RP (Real Photo) Processor Pro. So check it wedding photographers ’cause Fujifilm claims the new S5 provides an ever greater dynamic range with smoother tonality from highlight to shadow said to rival that of 35mm film. Improvements are also announced in the aufo-focus, i-TTL flash, metering, battery-life, DR control, and ISO 3200 sensitivity. We’ll have to wait and see since the S5 Pro won’t be out until February 2007. Also announced is the 6.3 megpaixel FinePix F31fd which is just the F30 with a bit of a cosmetic lift to pack-in their hardware-based face recognitation technology we’ve seen before. Look for the F31fd to drop (in the UK anyway) starting late November. Expect pricing on both closer to their respective launch dates. Pics of the F31fd after the break.

While Creative and Apple may have settled their legal battles, they’re continuing to duke it out in the ring of portable media players. According to epiZENter‘s “reliable source,” Creative wants to introduce a new contender with an 8GB version of its Zen V Plus, to compete with the newly-supersized 8GB iPod nano. We’re all for competition in the marketplace, but Creative is going to have to move pretty fast if it wants to get its players out in time for the holiday shopping craze. Anonymous source or not, it’s well within the realm of possibility that Creative would want to go toe to toe with Apple — but of course, both Apple and Creative will have to take on the SanDisk Sansa e280 in the maxed-out flash-based DAP department.
