Xantrex PowerSource Mobile 100 brings the volts

Posted on 30 August 2006 by admin

We’ve seen plenty of mobile chargers in our day, but the Xantrex PowerSource Mobile 100 claims to be the first to power multiple devices simultaneously at different voltage and power levels. The $130 unit includes a pair of USB ports and an AC plug, making it a quite convenient way to power your phone, iPod and laptop all at once. Xantrex promises plenty of power, too: 2 hours for laptops, 12 hours for portable game systems, and a spankin’ 72 hours for the iPod nano. Of course, the lithium-ion based PowerSource is a decent bit heftier than a spare laptop or phone battery, but if gadget diversity is your game it doesn’t seem you can go far wrong here.

Epson launches three inkjets: R260, R380, and the RX580 all-in-one

Posted on 30 August 2006 by admin

Epson unveiled three new “Ultra Hi-Definition” photo printers on Monday with the launch of the Stylus Photo R260, R380 (pictured) and RX580 all-in-one. All three share the same print engine and redesigned print heads to print 4×6 photos in just 13 seconds while spitting out B/W or colored text at up to 30 pages per minute — both bests for Epson photo printers. They also feature Epson’s unique, out-of-the-box ability to print direct to printable CD/DVDs dropped into the front-loading tray. The R260 is the base model with the R380 adding memory card slots and a large, 3.5-inch LCD right up front for viewing your shots when printing directly off memory cards; something you’ll do oh, maybe once in a lifetime if you’re one of the lucky few to actually own a computer at home with even the most rudimentary photo management software installed. The RX580 drops that pointless LCD down to 2.5-inches but brings a 1,200 pixel per inch optical scanner with a useful direct-to-PDF function. As you’d expect, scanned images can then be copied (aka, printed) at that same 30 pages per minute rate. And when combined with Epson’s new Claria ink, your photos will last longer than even those produced by a professional lab. Hey, that’s what Epson is touting in the hopes of locking you into their replacement ink cartridges for the decades it will take to prove ‘em wrong. Expect the R260 to pull $130 with the R380 and RX580 both demanding $200.

The Babykeeper

Posted on 30 August 2006 by admin

babykeeper.jpg

What is this contraption? A timeout enforcement device? No, it’s actually the Babykeeper, a patent pending infant carrier seat that hangs from public bathroom stalls so you can go about your business without worrying where to put your baby. OK, I admit now that my toddler is old enough to walk into a public restroom stall with me I get grossed out when I’m on the toilet and she’s touching everything in the stall, but not sure I’d go as far as hanging her on the doorstall. When she was younger, she’d either be in a stroller and I’d just go into a bigger handicap stall or I’d just keep her in the bjorn. You get pretty good at peeing with a baby in a sling after awhile.

But the inventors must have seen a need for this product in their lives and maybe many of you do too. If so, you can pre-order at a special introductory price of $39.99 until the end of the month. The price goes up 20 bucks after August 31.

AOpen Core 2 Duo MiniPCs

Posted on 30 August 2006 by admin

AOpen, creator of the Mac mini-mimicking miniPC, is the latest PC manufacturer to announce that it’ll be using Intel’s notebook version of the Core 2 Duo processor, this time in its ultra small form factor PCs. From now on, the company’s MP945-X, -VX, and -VXR PCs, along with a range of Series i975 and i945 motherboards, will all support Core 2 Duo. If you bought one of these products before this announcement and fancy getting in on the Core 2 Duo action, then all you need to do to add support is grab a new BIOS and set of drivers from the official site. UK-based miniPC reseller Evesham has already offered up some shots of a Core 2 Duo T7200 (2GHz, 4MB cache) and Windows MCE ’05-equipped model which also has a built-in digital TV tuner, 1GB of RAM, a 100GB 2.5-inch hard drive, along with a bundled remote control. Finally, the DVI port at the back runs off an integrated graphics chip, which isn’t much of a surprise considering the machine’s diminutive 50 x 165 x 165mm dimensions, although the £799 incl. VAT price tag doesn’t make us feel any better about it.

Elmo SUV-Cam Micro Video Camera System

Posted on 30 August 2006 by admin

elmocam.jpg
If you ever wanted to snoop on your unsuspecting neighbors before but didn’t think there was a small enough camera out there to get the job done, Elmo has a surprise for you with its SUV-cam. This micro video camera—micro being 2.2×4.0×1.1-inches—system is able to capture MPEG-4 video with a resolution of 704×480 pixels. Better yet, should you, Mr. Bond, need to take the camera under water, you can rest easy knowing that it’s water-proof up to 12 feet.

Just like other cool gadgets that help you reenact Porky’s, Elmo’s micro camera solution will set you back quite a bit of coin. In fact, if you’re not willing to part with about $750, you might as well forget about it. Plus, you’d have to import it from Japan where it launches on September 29.
