Road Qtopia – Linux Cellphone/PDA

Posted on 17 August 2006 by admin

[From Terry Rahilly] Here is news of a new Linux PDA and I guess that there is still very much a need for PDA because they are still being produced and I like the design of this beauty. “It seems that the number of Linux PDA devices just keeps growing, the German based phone maker Road just announced an Qtopia based Linux Cellphone/PDA. The original article gives more details: ‘Opening the clamshell device reveals a QWERTY keyboard and a 640 x 240 display — closed, the unit presents a 102 x 65 monochrome phone screen. The HandyPC contains the usual array of PIM and messaging apps, along with a viewer to read Microsoft Office files. It will ship with PC synchronisation tools, media player software and a web browser. It can even be used as a voice recorder.’” Rather than Nokia’s 770, to me Road’s phone more closely resembles Nokia’s 9XXX series.”

The Ice Cellphone from O2

Posted on 17 August 2006 by admin

European cellphone carrier O2 just announced the Ice, an all-white cellphone that’s sure to make the same sort of splash that other oddly-named cellphones have made here. This 3G candybar comes with Bluetooth support, an MP3 player and a 1.3-megapixel camera. Ice is supposed to excel at video calling, but never having seen it action, I’ll withhold my opinion. It also uses O2′s Active service, so you can look forward to being inundated with news and infotainment 24/7. What, Michael Owen injured again? Hang up the boots, kid.

Look for the Ice in September in the UK for around $190 on pre-paid plans. Who knows if we’ll see any Ice in the U.S.

Falcom USB EDGE Cards for Ultraportables

Posted on 17 August 2006 by admin

Once again, Mobility Today’s Dave got his mitts on some exclusive gadgetry, this time USB EDGE cards for ultraportable devices. (Well, one EDGE card at least.) The Plug-and-play Falcom Samba 75 grants the user access to the sweet speeds of the EDGE variety, along with GSM and GPRS support. Even better, there’s a SIM slot right on the module, so if you’re one of those people who own dozens of cellphones (to keep all of your girlfriends in line, naturally), a simple SIM transfer will have you up and running before the wife finds out.

Also featured in the hands-on is the Falcom Samba, which supports GSM and GPRS, but not EDGE.

Both cards, of which Dave has plenty of pictures of, are available now.

The Web 2.0 Top 20 List by Site Traffic

Posted on 17 August 2006 by admin

Paul Kedrosky submits:
Seth Godin has pointed to a great Web 2.0 traffic watch list that the folks at Alexaholic have put up for him.

Fascinating stuff, especially at the extremes, where there has been virtually no movement in the top twenty, and huge movement in the bottom two hundred. Granted, some of that is an artifact of the list length — it is easier to move up 90 places on a 900-item list if you start in position 900 than if you start in position 91 — but it’s still good stuff.

The list is headed up my 75 million member strong MySpace, purchased by News Corp. in 2005.
