Nikon scores FCC approval for D200 DSLR WiFi transmitter

Posted on 10 August 2006 by admin

Looks like Nikon is intent on rocking the WiFi on its digital cameras, despite some pesky security concerns with the implementation on its Coolpix P1 and P2 digicams. This new WT-3 Wireless Transmitter that’s just gotten FCC approval, however, looks to be fairly substantial, so maybe it won’t be so easily susceptible to the same problems. It’s also quite a bit more capable, not only wirelessly transmitting photos to your PC, but directly to an FTP server or printer as well. The transmitter will also apparently let you control your camera from your computer, and works with 100BaseTx/10BaseT wired networks if WiFi’s not your thing. According to the FCC filings, the transmitter’s designed to work exclusively with Nikon’s D200 digital SLR, but it seems fairly likely that the same technology could be put to use with other cameras sooner or later.

Lenovo V100

Posted on 10 August 2006 by admin

At 31.75mm thick and 4-pounds, the V100 manages to house a 12.1-inch WXGA display with VibrantView technology, perfect for watching your favorite DVDs. On the inside, you’ll find an Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83-GHz) processor, 1GB of DDR2-667 memory, 100GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD combo drive, and a 1.3-megapixel camera (select models). External interfaces include three USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, 5-in-1 memory card reader, fingerprint sensor, and Bluetooth. Here’s the verdict:

At first glance the V100 suffers for looks and build quality compared to a genuine ThinkPad. However it does bring many ThinkPad features to a more affordable price point. I wouldn’t consider it though unless it’s paired with an extended battery as the standard one is far too weedy

Solar-Powered Security Camera

Posted on 10 August 2006 by admin

Smarthome unveils a new motion-sensing outdoor security camera that is powered solely by sunlight. Best of all, this device only transmits A/V when movement (up to 26-feet) is detected — otherwise, it remains in standby mode to conserve energy. Available now for $159.99.

If it was just a sparrow, the 2.4-GHz camera will stop transmitting a preset number of seconds after the moving object leaves its field of view

Stephen Johnson’s Coffee Table PC

Posted on 10 August 2006 by admin

Just face it, Stephen Johnson has a cooler coffee table than you. While you’ve been busy finding large and colorful books full of puppies and/or Oprah Winfrey to stack on top of yours (OK, maybe that’s just us), Stephen Johnson has been building the “ultimate” Media PC inside of his mod-inspired table, and it looks pretty darn sweet. The Coffee Table PC is featured in this month’s issue of T3 magazine, and includes a TV tuner, a 160GB HDD, a special LCD for displaying the weather, and is liquid cooled to keep things nice and quiet. There’s also WiFi for streaming your media wirelessly, but the £2500 starter pricetag ($4765 US) is enough to send us scurrying back to the relative safety of our collection of kitschy books.

Pioneer’s VSA-AX1AV 7.1ch receiver with 2 x HDMI and iPod support

Posted on 10 August 2006 by admin

Pioneer just dropped a couple of 7.1 channel receivers sportin’ twin HDMI inputs. The mid-class VSA-AX1AV flaunts Pioneer’s not-so-gimmicky Advanced MCACC technology which evaluates the acoustic characteristics of your room (including reverb) and then optimizes your home cinema speakers to approach “studio quality” sound. They also throw in an iPod input on top of generic USB DAP support which allows you to control your beloved iPod via Pioneer’s remote while slapping your iPod’s information up on the ol’ TeeVee. And as we’ve seen in previous Pioneer receivers, this pup supports lossless WMA9 Pro audio playback in addition to the usual smattering of compressed formats like MP3, WMA, and AAC when you simply have no other choice. Also available is the trimmed-down VSA-1016V receiver which lacks MCACC and iPod support among other notables. Shipping in Japan mid-September with the VSA-AX1AV said to pull Â¥118,000 (about $1,025) while the VSA-1016V should garner about Â¥92,000 (about $800).
