Nokia re-ups 8800 specs with “Sirocco Edition”

Posted on 09 August 2006 by admin

Nokia’s 8800 is what you might call a sit-there-and-look-pretty phone; despite its stratospheric sticker price, no one ever asked the Vertu-esque handset (or its North American cousin, the 8801) to lead the pack with its spec sheet. Nonetheless, with over a year of market availability under its belt, we wouldn’t mind seeing ‘er put out to pasture, and it looks like Nokia’s on the same page. The 8800′s successor is actually more of a mild refresh than a true replacement; in fact, they didn’t even change the model number — the 8800 “Sirocco Edition” sports a streamlined exterior with a funky-looking dent in its slide, a redesigned keyboard, and not much else. Some folks are claiming the new model will upgrade the cam from SVGA to a full 2 megapixels, which seems believable enough, but the German shop we’ve got here (currently) shows the same ol’ 800 x 600. No word on a GSM 850-friendly 8801 Sirocco Edition in the works, but if the European price of €1099 (roughly $1400) for the 8800 were to carry over, we’d lack the wherewithal to rock it anyway.

[Thanks, Gib]

The BlackBerry Pearl: 8100 gets a name

Posted on 09 August 2006 by admin

What was once known as the BlackBerry Stealth, then as the BlackBerry 8100, is now known as the BlackBerry Pearl. That’s right, RIM’s first cameraphone with media capabilities and external storage is coming to T-Mobile on September 18th. We know you want, nay, need the details, so here you go: it’s got a 65k color 240 x 260 display, microSD slot, 64MB internal flash, EDGE data, and will retail for $199 at launch. Seriously, that’s not bad at all! What, still don’t believe us? Well, not that we’ve ever led you (too) astray in the past, but click on if you want the full NDA’d press release. What, we can’t help it if RIM’s peeps can’t keep a secret.

This gadget will provide aerial images of the links, GPS-powered distance guides, rules, regulations, flyovers and any other golf information you could want. It is powered by a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX N520 PDA. The entire system costs 380 pounds, or roughly $724, just don’t get caught using it on the tour or your face will be introduced to a 4-iron in the clubhouse.

Sony TA-DA3200ES Receiver Brings Serious Power

Posted on 09 August 2006 by admin

As the HDMI spec filters throughout the home theater landscape, more and more receivers fall into line supporting that high-definition audio and video I/O scheme, and now Sony’s TA-DA3200ES receiver joins the crowd with the ability to move 1080p video from one place to another with plenty of power to spare.

The thing that will really rock the Casbah is its sheer brute force, where it’s able to spit out 120 watts per channel, rather unremarkable until you consider there are seven channels involved in its 7.1 output. Imagine that, 840 watts. We haven’t seen the back of this monster yet, but it’s got to look like one of those old patch panels the telephone company used in the early part of the previous century.

Tipping the Kangol to one of our astute commenter’s remarks from earlier today, maybe one day there will just be one input and one output, all HDMI. We’re not holding our breath.
