Philips’ Streamium WAK3300 WiFi alarm clock

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

Philips just announced this new wireless WAK3300 alarm clock as an extension to their Streamium range of connected home media devices. So as the name implies, you can stream your tunes over WiFi to this bedside pup from your WACS700 (which also got a drive bump to 80GB) Music Center or via internal storage just in case your home network is down or turned off for the night. We presume (it isn’t stated) that the device will accept streams from any device supporting UPnP (such as your PC or SoundBridge) since that’s the tech at the heart of both the Streamium lineup and Philips’ home connectivity strategy. But we’ll just have to wait for the details before getting too far ahead of ourselves on this.

Asus W3J 14-inch Centrino Duo laptop reviewed

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

It might not be as fancy as the high-class Lamborghinis our pals at Engadget Chinese saw at Computex, but according to this review, the 14-inch Centrino Duo W3J is a winner. Weighing in around 4-pounds, it fits right into the ultra-portable category, but doesn’t skimp on specs including a Core Duo processor, 1GB DDR2 RAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 that maxes out at 512 MB when the HyperMemory kicks in (256MB onboard and 256MB shared RAM). It even has the Bluetooth 2.0 that its cousin the A8Jm was so tragically missing – at least here in the States. All that, plus Asus’ signature brushed metal styling and a battery life of about 2.75 make this machine sound like a champ, but we still can’t help but think about the slick Q35 we could buy with the £1029 asking price.

LG U400

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

LG’s U400 is a sleek slider phone that features 2.0-megapixel camera, microSD card slot, TFT-LCD display, scroll-wheel navigation, Bluetooth, and stereo speakers. No word yet on pricing and availability.

The scroll wheel lets you navigate through contacts, MP3s and the rest of the menu. It even makes a scratching noise when an MP3 is playing, so that you can pretend you’re as cool as Grandmaster Flash — as long as no one is listening

Dicota Link does USB 2.0 PC-to-PC data transfer

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

What happens if your hip new pre-N network is on the fritz and you need to transfer more data than your Micro Vault can handle? The solution would be simple if you had Dicota Korea’s Link handy. This little device offers simple 480Mb/s PC-to-PC networking in a nifty little Plug & Play package. No word on a US release, but from what we can tell the Link is Windows-only and sports blue LEDs that let you know when a connection has been made. And don’t let the picture scare you, the approximately €20 price tag includes a cable extension so you won’t need to keep the computers too close for comfort. [Warning: source link not in English]

Dell’s new D420 ultraportable

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

Dell’s got a bit of a hit and miss history with ultraportables — especially in the last couple of years, with the sleeper X1 (a rebadged Samsung Q30), and the 700m, a successful machine by all accounts, but one we just never really bought into. Their latest foray into the form factor comes as the D420, a three pound widescreen that appears to fall some place in between the D410 and the X1; expect a 12.1-inch display with Cingular or Verizon support (as expected) in the US and Vodafone overseas, as well as “802.11n ready” status (whatever that means), the Wi-Fi Catcher switch (that turns your shut-down computer into a hotspot finder), SD slot, three USB ports, one FireWire port, a Core Solo ULV processor, seven hour battery, and $1,379 base price tag. Not too shabby, but is it enough to take on Gateway’s NX100X?

Epson’s Endeavor NA701 14-inch Core Duo laptop

Posted on 05 July 2006 by admin

Epson introduced a new lightweight laptop to their Endeavor line-up today with the A4 sized NA701. Weighing in at less than 4-pounds (without slot-loading DVD-ROM drive) this 0.9/1.5-inch wedge maxes out with the 2.16GHz Core Duo T2600 we’re all familiar with by now, a 14.1-inch, 1,400 x 1,050 pixel display, 1.5GB DDR2 memory, 100GB SATA disk, 4.2 hour battery, and an nVIDIA GeForce Go 7300 graphics card with 128MB dedicated VRAM to feed Vista’s Premium UI hog it’ll run, someday. It also slams in the usual array of connectivity and expansion including WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, Firewire, 4 x USB 2.0, a 3-in-1 memory card reader, and a couple of PCMCIA slots. Pretty much everything you’ll need for day to day, run-o-the-mill portable computing. Expected to drop June 20th in Japan with prices starting at about Â¥119,700 (about $1,040) if you don’t mind XGA resolution, a 1.46GHz Celeron M 410 proc, 40GB disk and integrated Intel graphics.
