O2 BlackBerry 7130g: Hands-on with the 7100x successor

Posted on 02 June 2006 by admin

We’ve been lucky enough to get our hands on the O2 BlackBerry 7130g, launched yesterday, which is the successor to the O2 BlackBerry 7100x. As you can see, it looks more like a mobile phone than any other BlackBerry device to date and measures a relatively pocket-friendly 56 by 115 by 18mm. Compared to the 7100x, it’s not only smaller but lighter by 2g and we like the new design, which is smoother and rounder.

The 7130g is similar to the 7100x in size, but has the same dedicated side convenience key and mute button as on the T-Mobile BlackBerry 8700g. The most original aspect of the handset is the new keypad, which is reminiscent of a mobile phone keypad but has a Qwerty layout and isn’t as cumbersome as the 8700g’s flat and squashed full keypad.

Aside from aesthetic changes, the real improvements to the phone have been made on the inside. The 7130g features a fairly swift Intel XScale 312MHz processor, identical to the one found in the BlackBerry 8700g, and has 64MB flash memory and 16MB SRAM. It also has an improved battery life of around eight days on standby and three hours talk time. The phone is available on O2 now — for more information visit its Web site. -AL

World’s First Wall-Socket PC

Posted on 02 June 2006 by admin

The wall-socket residing unit lost its DVI port, opting for a plain old VGA connection instead, but still runs Windows CE and a 500MHz AMD RISC processor. With 64MB of flash memory and 128MB RAM, the little unit is quite dependant on a server, and has Citrix ICA and Microsoft RDP clients built in, along with Internet Explorer 6.0 for running around the interwebs. The biggest news here — beyond the size, of course — is that the unit can actually run off of power-over-Ethernet, just to make your fellow IT buddies jealous. At $392 you could really get a whole PC for this price, but if the low power or minimal footprint appeals to you, you’ll be able to pick one up mid-June.

Mosquito Jihad: Mega-Catch Ultra Trap

Posted on 02 June 2006 by admin

We’re looking for a way to put the hurt on clouds of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, something a mosquito-repelling T-shirt or necklace probably can’t do very well. Enter the Mega-Catch Ultra Trap, a serious-looking contraption that lures in the little buggers with a combination of flashing LEDs, an ultraviolet light and a strip of octenol. After attracting those bloodsuckers, it vacuums them up to their well-deserved deaths. The trap’s maker claims it can murder 3707 mosquitoes per night. If that’s not enough, you can add on a CO2 tank for extra killage.

That “3707 mosquitoes” death toll sounds pretty impressive until you figure that in your yard there are probably thousands more than that out for blood every night. We’re skeptical of any device being able to handle that kind of threat. Wondering if it works? Pony up $499 and you can find out for yourself.
