Insolia: For Da Ladies

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

Insolia is some sort of insole for high heels that reduces pressure on the front of the foot and spreads it along the entire foot, reducing strain and pain associated with sassing about town in a Prada. Apparently the “ladies” get something called “heel hangover” when they’re trying to look “beautiful” for the “men” in their lives. I say sweatpants, flip-flops, a McDonald’s 1986 Fun Run T-Shirt, and some black powder is all you need to have fun. But then I don’t really spend a lot of time with women.

They’re $8.90 per pair or $17.80 for three pairs. Available online. Do yourself a favor—fight heel hangover.

Mitac’s Mio P350 and P550 appear online

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

So it looks like Mitac‘s new Mio GPS Pocket PCs, the P350 and P550, have hit the web. We’ve half a mind to blow ‘em off for their milk and water looks, but according to Mobinaute, who dug these up, the P550 will feature a 400MHz CPU, SiRFstar III GPS receiver, WiFi, Bluetooth, SDIO, and Windows Mobile 5.0 — you can’t argue with specs like those. Unfortunately, the P350 is WiFi and Bluetooth-free, though, so it can hit the highway, jack. Mitac’s apparently also got a few new CE.net devices up their sleeves as well, including the Mio C710, C510E, C210, and H610, which feature SiRFstar III receivers, and lots of Euro-only map business; the combination of which, you can imagine, doesn’t exactly spark our interest.

Canon bulks up PowerShot line with 8 upgraded compacts

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

No, we’re not quite done with Canon for today. Not content with satisfying the pro and prosumer markets with the EOS 30D and S3 IS, the company has also unveiled no fewer than eight new or upgraded consumer models. Ready for the rundown? Pay attention, because there’s a lot to cover here, and there will be a quiz after class. At the compact end of the line, Canon has upgraded the Digital Elph (aka IXUS) series with the SD600, SD630 and SD 700 IS (pictured above). All three models are compact 6 megapixel shooters, with the main differences being a larger LCD display on the 630 (3 inches, vs. 2.5 on the other two), and the addition of image stabilization and a 4x zoom (as opposed to 3x) on the 700. And it’s a good thing the 630 has that larger LCD, since it skips the optical viewfinder. Canon has also upgraded its more A series of compacts, with five new models, including the 6 megapixel A700 and A540; the 700 has a  6x optical zoom, while the 540 has a 4x zoom. The lower-end A420, 430 and 530 are basic 4 megapixel (or 5 megapixel, in the case of the 530) point-and-shoots. Pics of SD models and the A series:

Japan bans old electronics as of April 1

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

No, this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke: If you’re in Japan and looking for a deal on used gear, your days are numbered, at least if that gear is more than five years old. It seems that Japan’s government revised its “Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law” back in April 2001, and added a stipulation that items authorized under the country’s old law (the “Electrical Appliance and Material Control Law”) couldn’t be sold anymore, but granted those products a five-year grace period. Well, if you check your convenient wall calendar, you’ll see that the five-year period is about to end, which means that as of April 1, pretty much any electronic gear sold before April 1, 2001 can’t be legally resold in Japan. Note that we said legally. We assume that if you’re really jonesing for an original Famicom or parts for your aging Zaurus, you’ll find a way to do it. Such as meeting outside the Zoo in Ueno Koen at midnight on Tuesday and asking for Yuki. Just don’t mention our name.

Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z850 and EX-Z60 digital cameras

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

More pre-PMA goods for ya’ll. This time it’s two new compact shooters in the form of the Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z850 and EX-Z60. First the Z850 (pictured) which is pretty much the Z750 with an incremental bump to 8.1 megapixels, an improved shutter lag of just 0.003 seconds, and inclusion of a much needed anti-shake DSP. Otherwise, it’s the same 3x optical zoom and 2.5-inch LCD we’ve seen before. The 6 megapixel EX-Z60 does away with the glass viewfinder on the Z850 yet fails to increase the LCD beyond 2.5-inches or lens beyond a 3x zoom in attempts to keep the all-metal package slim. Even though it’s small, Casio claims to keep out the blur with image stabilization and near instant image recording via that low 0.002 seconds shutter release lag. Both cameras feature SD expansion. Still no word on pricing or availability.

LG U890 3G Slim Phone with Razr Keypad

Posted on 22 February 2006 by admin

Slashphone is showing some nice pics of the LG U890 3G slim phone.

“At 17.5mm thickness, LG U890 is definitely not the slimmest yet but it give you the power of 3G connection with a slim body. Keypad of the U890 get the most upgrade from the old U880, it’s now flat, silver to save on the thickness. 1.3 megapixel camera is good enough for a mobile phone and it is used for both photo shot and video calls.”
