WorldTracker SMS and Google Earth

Posted on 25 January 2006 by admin

Have a nefarious reason to know the whereabouts of your spouse, teenager, or wayward employee?  Introducing the WorldTracker SMS by Security Concepts.  The WorldTracker SMS is a small GPS device powered by the SiRFstarIII chipset (which includes WAAS for signal correction/accuracy) and includes a built-in tri-band GSM module for sending tracking messages via SMS to as many as seven cell phones or PDA’s.  With Security Concepts’ monthly service offerings, you can also track your target using Google Earth – a first in the industry for real-time trackers.  The device can run for up to 24 hours on its own internal lithium-ion battery, or with the inclusion of an external battery pack anywhere from 4 to 15 days.  For those extended tracking sessions the GPS can also be hardwired to any 12-volt power source.  Street level pricing appears to be $600-700 depending on where you shop.

Hitachi TV Phone

Posted on 25 January 2006 by admin

One-segment broadcasting is a service that allows you to watch terrestrial digital broadcasts from mobile phones and other devices. It will be available in Japan starting April 1. And Hitachi has produced a mobile phone to capitalize on this, it’s the W41H, and will be supplied by au. It has a 2.7-inch LCD display that can be twisted around and folded over. This is called “view style” and when it is placed on the charging stand, the one-segment TV tuner starts automatically. You can watch for about 3 hours 45 minutes. Maximum recording time is around 30 minutes. With the music function, services from au like “au LISTEN MOBILE SERVICE (LISMO) “, “au Music Player”, and “au Music Port” can be used as well. Playlists can be attached to mail and sent. It has a miniSD slot, and SD-Audio music files can also be played. It also has a digital camera (2.07-megapixel), of course. The size is 2 x 4.1 x 1.1 inches, and the weight is 5.6 oz. Price TBA.

Swissbit bumps their knives to 2GB

Posted on 25 January 2006 by admin

We’ve run these Swissbit Swiss Army Knife drives by you before, along with their snazzed up “Prestige” counterparts and s.beat MP3 playing friends, but Swissbit is bumping their original version up to 2GB, and the geek factor on these units is still alive and well. They’re including the usual scissors, knife, nail file, and screw driver on the rubyRED and retroALOX versions, while the rubyRED version — which is looking a tad chubby these days — also adds a ballpoint pen and an LED light for extra geek cred. You can even pop out the drive part for flying, since the TSA isn’t so hot on knives these days, or just make a run for it at the security gate and see how far you get.

Sony adds Vaio F TV laptop for video on the go

Posted on 25 January 2006 by admin

Sony has added at least one new laptop to the slew of Vaios the company showed off at CES. The Vaio F TV series will, as the name implies, include features for viewing TV on the computer, including a built-in tuner, 15.4-inch display, MPEG encoder card, remote control and dual-layer burner. However, it looks like Sony’s hoping to have it both ways with these; the F TV series will come with Windows XP Pro, rather than MCE.

Jens of Sweden MP-500

Posted on 25 January 2006 by admin

Looks like Jens of Sweden is back with a vengeance. The formerly bankrupt company has managed to come up with the MP-500, a sleek player in a familiar form factor (the company’s press release arrived with a subject line boasting of the player’s “nano format”), that includes audio, video, FM, voice recorder, and built-in speakers, with a fairly reasonable price of $242 for the 2GB version (a 1GB version is $189). Oh, and to differentiate this from that other “nano format” player, Jens is boasting that this one is scratchproof, and is available in both black and a bling-worthy gold finish (for $274).

P.S. -We thought it looked familiar. Thanks to Darth T for reminding us where Jens of Sweden’s really getting their devices these days.
